چکیده

In a number of application areas, it is desirable to obtain sparse solutions. Minimizing the number of nonzeroes of the solution (its `0-norm) is a difficult nonconvex optimization problem, and is often approximated by the convex problem of minimizing the `1-norm. In contrast, we consider exact formulations as mathematical programs with complementarity constraints and their reformulations as smooth nonlinear programs. We discuss properties of the various formulations and their connections to the original `0-minimization problem in terms of stationarity conditions, as well as local and global optimality. Numerical experiments using randomly generated problems show that standard nonlinear programming solvers, applied to the smooth but nonconvex equivalent reformulations, are often able to find sparser solutions than those obtained by the convex `1-approximation.

Sparse solutions of linear complementarity problems

This paper considers the characterization and computation of sparse solutions and leastp-norm (0 < p < 1) solutions of the linear complementarity problems LCP(q,M). We show that the number of non-zero entries of any least-p-norm solution of the LCP(q,M) is less than or equal to the rank of M for any arbitrary matrix M and any number p ∈ (0, 1), and there is p̄ ∈ (0, 1) such that all least-p-norm...

The eigenvalue complementarity problem

In this paper an eigenvalue complementarity problem (EiCP) is studied, which finds its origins in the solution of a contact problem in mechanics. The EiCP is shown to be equivalent to a Nonlinear Complementarity Problem, a Mathematical Programming Problem with Complementarity Constraints and a Global Optimization Problem. A finite Reformulation–Linearization Technique (RLT)-based tree search al...

Bilinear Programming

f(x, y) = a x + x Qy + b y, where a, x ∈ R, b, y ∈ R, and Q is a matrix of dimension n ×m. It is easy to see that bilinear functions compose a subclass of quadratic functions. We refer to optimization problems with bilinear objective and/or constraints as bilinear problems, and they can be viewed as a subclass of quadratic programming. Bilinear programming has various applications in constraine...

Optimization with Linear Complementarity Constraints

A Mathematical Program with Linear Complementarity Constraints (MPLCC) is an optimization problem where a continuously differentiable function is minimized on a set defined by linear constraints and complementarity conditions on pairs of complementary variables. This problem finds many applications in several areas of science, engineering and economics and is also an important tool for the solu...

Copositivity and constrained fractional quadratic problems

We provide Completely Positive and Copositive Optimization formulations for the Constrained Fractional Quadratic Problem (CFQP) and Standard Fractional Quadratic Problem (StFQP). Based on these formulations, Semidefinite Programming (SDP) relaxations are derived for finding good lower bounds to these fractional programs, which can be used in a global optimization branch-and-bound approach. Appl...
